Interim Vice-Provost and
Dean of Students
Whether you are new to the University of Alberta or are returning to school, it’s exciting to see our campuses come alive with the energy of students. You play a key role in our vibrant University community, and it is my hope that you’ll find your experience here to be valuable and fulfilling.
In student services, our mission is to help you achieve your full potential as a U of A student — within the university community and wherever life takes you. While we hope your experiences here will be positive and engaging, we know that you may encounter obstacles. The Dean of Students portfolio is here to help you turn those difficulties into successes. Whether you need to improve your grades or just need someone to talk to, our services and resources are ready for you.
If you begin to feel stressed, lonely, or concerned about your mental health...
Experts in Counselling and Clinical Services and on the Community Social Work team can help you on your journey to mental well-being or connect you to the people and resources you need. Regular events such as Furry Friends and Unwind Your Mind offer a break from our busy lives and remind us that we are never alone within the U of A community.
If you need help with your academic achievements...
Professionals in the Student Success Centre provide students with workshops and individual consultations — targeting the areas they need help with, and the Student Conduct and Accountability provides information and advice on academic integrity.
If you begin to feel under the weather…
Visit the University Health Clinic in person or access their online reporting program, which works to keep you and other students healthy. The University Health Centre Pharmacy fills prescriptions and can provide counselling on medications.
If you experience something unfamiliar or upsetting...
Sometimes life becomes harder than we expect. And although we hope you won’t need these services, you or friends might require them. These critical services include the Office of the Student Ombuds, the Sexual Assault Centre, the Community Social Work team, and many others.
I encourage you to take some time to understand the wide range of programs and services we offer that you might find helpful. We are dedicated to your success and strive to ensure that all students have a positive experience at the U of A. In choosing to pursue your studies at the University of Alberta, each of you is contributing in your own way to the rich fabric of our community.
Best wishes for a productive and rewarding year ahead!
